Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Registered Counsellor?

registered counsellor is a mental health professional trained to provide short-term, psychoeducational, preventative, and supportive services. We do not diagnose or offer long-term therapy, but provide focused support for common mental health concerns. Registered Counsellors are held to the standards of training of the HPCSA and must meet all these requirements to take their national board exam.

What is the HPCSA?

The Health Professions Council of South Africa regulates health professionals like psychologists and doctors, etc. and ensures ethical, high-quality care. As a registered counsellor, I adhere to all HPCSA guidelines.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy uses toys, art, games, and creative tools to help children express emotions and make sense of experiences. It is particularly helpful for children dealing with trauma, behavioural issues, or developmental challenges.

How do I know I need counselling?

If you’re feeling stuck, anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally numb, or like things aren’t working no matter how hard you try- counselling may help. You don’t need a formal diagnosis or big crisis to reach out. If you’re asking whether you should talk to someone, that’s often reason enough. You should only begin the process if you feel ready!

What medical aids do you take?

Currently, we operate as a cash-based practice. You will receive an invoice that you may submit to your medical aid for potential reimbursement, depending on your specific plan.

How do I book a session?

Session bookings can be made by phone call or WhatsApp (064 556 4911) or via email.

Bookings are available for in-person counselling in Waterkloof, Pretoria.

You can use the following automatic booking system for your convenience.

What’s an introductory call?

This is a 20 minute call for you to get to know me a little bit and share a few of the concerns that bring you to counselling. Firstly, it’s a low pressure and no commitment opportunity to see if I seem like a person you could feel safe and comfortable with. This prevents clients from wasting their time or having an uncomfortable experience by allowing them to make an informed decision! It also eases some of the tension of a first session! (Which I know can be a little scary)! Lastly, it helps me to assess if I am the right professional to assist you and if not I can consequently direct you to a better suited practitioner.

Do you offer free counselling?

We offer a limited number of sliding scale and low-cost sessions based on availability (see next question). We also provide referrals to NGOs and community-based organisations offering free mental health support where appropriate.

What is a sliding scale spot?

Mental health care can be expensive! We understand that not everyone has access to medical aid or finances, but that doesn’t make you any less deserving of care and support!

Sliding scale spots are “pay-what-you-can” services. The name says it all! When requesting a booking with me you can fill out the form below and attach it to your email. Then you will be able to pay what you can afford and be empowered to access counselling!

Please note: filling the form and inquiring does not guarantee acceptance of your proposed rate. This is an ongoing discussion between you and the registered counsellor if you become a client. There are also a limited number of pay scale spots available at any given time!

When should I take my child for counselling?

If your child is struggling with big emotions, acting out, withdrawing, or having ongoing issues at school or home, it might be time to speak to a mental health practitioner. Changes in sleep, appetite, mood, or behaviour can all be signs your child needs emotional support. If you’re worried, trust your instincts — early support can make a big difference. Please read our blog on When to Seek Professional Help for more guidance.
